Maternal & Newborn Health

Saving Mothers & Babies

Each year in Tanzania, 11,000 women die due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth and 66,000 babies do not survive their first month of life.

The Government of Tanzania has made this situation a national priority and in response, CCBRT expanded its mission to include the provision of high-quality maternal and newborn care. This was a logical step as CCBRT recognises the critical link between quality maternal and newborn care and early identification of preventable disability.

The Maternity Wing (MW) provides care to high-risk and emergency cases, including mothers with disabilities, histories of fistula, and adolescents. In keeping with CCBRT’s ethos of comprehensive care, the CCBRT Maternity and Newborn Wing provides integrated services along a continuum of care model, treating patients from their first antenatal visit through delivery and early motherhood.

We are committed to patient-centred and respectful care, preserving the mother-baby dyad, facilitating the inclusion of birthing partners, and dedicating space for Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) for low birth weight and premature babies.

Building on CCBRT’s social enterprise sustainability model, profit generated from MW’s private obstetric and gynaecological services will subsidise care for vulnerable patients who are referred to MW with a high-risk pregnancy or emergency.

Family Planning

Informed Choice

CCBRT integrates family planning into its outreach activities, inpatient obstetric fistula care, and maternal and newborn health care.

Access to safe, effective, and affordable family planning reduces maternal mortality and morbidity and enables women to fulfil their potential through education and employment. Family planning also decreases infant mortality and is a highly cost-effective means of preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission.

Early and frequent childbearing has serious consequences for the health of girls and women, contributing to higher rates of mortality and morbidity from obstetric complications. Women and girls also suffer adverse socioeconomic consequences of early and frequent childbearing. Girls who experience their first pregnancy in adolescence often leave school, jeopardising their future social and economic opportunities.
